[Although Penn State’s Nittany Lions aren’t “aren't bowl—or postseason—eligible” because of NCAA sanctions, they’re playing traditional rivals the Fighting Illini—who publicly offered to recruit deserting Penn State players—this weekend. The team you see above is much whiter than average in top-class college football. Time will tell if this is an advantage or a disadvantage. But for a university dealing with the legacy of sex crimes, it’s a lot safer.]

Right after the Freeh Report [PDF] detailed how “a culture of reverence for the football program” permeated Penn State and enabled now-convicted child rapist/predator Jerry Sandusky, ultimately destroying the legacy of Coach Joe Paterno, I argued with a mix of hyperbole and disgust that “College football should be banned.”

The naive might have thought the university would indeed drop its football program. The NCAA, the governing body of collegiate athletics, imposed a $60 million fine on Penn State and banned the football team from playing in the post-season. In an Orwellian move, the school vacated football wins since the Sandusky cover-up began, meaning that Paterno lost his spot atop the list of all-time wins as a head coach in Division I (FBS) football, and also removed his statue from outside the football stadium.

But never underestimate the power of the Opiate of America. Forbes magazine valued Penn State’s football program at $100 million in 2011, with the program generating a $53 million profit. Dropping football was never an option at Penn State.

The NCAA was nice enough to offer every member of the team the chance to transfer to another program without sitting out the year normally required of all athletes who transfer. Prominent among those who fled Happy Valley: black running back Silas Redd, whose goal of landing an NFL contract probably supersedes that of attaining a college degree.

Additionally, the new coaches of Penn State can no longer recruit the top high school athletes with promises of playing for a Big Ten or national title, or an appearance in a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) game.

Ironically, however, this means an important opportunity has appeared to address what I have argued is the “inefficient market” in football recruiting: the systematic undervaluation  of white athletes. (These inefficiencies do occur in sports: another one is documented in Michael Lewis’s book MoneyBall).

This anti-white discrimination from college recruiters has been documented anecdotally for years. Tom Lemming, the pioneer of high school evaluation  has stressed that there are hundreds of capable white athletes being passed over because of the stigma attached to their abilities. One example: Fred Bacco told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that recruiters informed him he was the “wrong color” to play running back. [Recruiting: Hopewell LB follows family tradition to BYU, January 27, 2004]

Another white high school running back sensation from the Pittsburgh area, Trent Wissner, told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Mark Madden a similar story. [Plenty of talent, but too white, January 2, 1999]

A case from this summer: Rex Burkhead, the white Nebraska Cornhuskers running back:

Recent polls show that black support for the first African-American president is as high as an incredible 100%. But looking at their workplace performance under Obama, it’s hard to avoid the conclusion that blacks are simply slaves to identity politics. Blacks have not only done badly under Obama—they’ve done worse that other racial groups.

Historically, black unemployment rates have been at multiples of other major racial and ethnic groups. This disparity usually widens during recessions, partly because workers with less education are particularly hard hit.

But black unemployment was slower to fall after the official end of this recession (June 2009). Result: the unemployment rate gap between blacks and other racial groups is larger now than it was when Barack Obama took office:

The latest employment report (August 2012) shows black unemployment at 14.1%, or fully 11 percentage points above the rate recorded at the start of the Obama Administration in January 2009. Over the same period the white unemployment rate increased by a mere 1.4%, while the Hispanic rate increased by 2.0%.

Since peaking at a catastrophic 16.7% in March 2010, the black unemployment rate fell to 14.1% in August—a reduction of 15.6% percentage points. By comparison, Hispanic and white unemployment rates have declined by 22.1 percentage points and 29.2% percentage points, respectively, from their Obama-era peaks.

At the start of the Obama years black unemployment rate was about 80% above the white rate; today the black rate is nearly double the white rate. This comes after a period, 2005 to 2009 – during which the racial gap narrowed.

Note that there is a disconnect between unemployment rates and employment. Although white unemployment rates are about the same today as on Mr. Obama’s inauguration day, the number of whites actually working is lower:

            From January 2009 to August 2012:

• White employment declined 2.29 million, or by -2.13%
• Black employment rose 312,000, or by +2.02%
• Hispanic employment rose by 2.07 million, or by +10.44%

Arguably, the immediate economic impact of joblessness is less dire for whites than for other groups. White workers are generally older. Many are eligible for Social Security and can receive retirement benefits after losing their jobs. Others can live off their savings until jobs become available. Both these groups may have left the labor force involuntarily, but if they tell the Bureau of Labor Statics

In the 1927, leftwing black poet Countee Cullen wrote a poem called "For a Lady I Know.” The “lady” would have been a white stay-at-home mother, or if older, a “clubwoman” supported by her husband or by inherited wealth—employing African-American (she, and they, would have said “colored”) servants.

She even thinks that up in heaven
 Her class lies late and snores

While poor black cherubs rise at seven
 To do celestial chores.

Today, that lady’s granddaughter may be a lawyer or a stockbroker in her own right—which means that she rises at seven to go into the City and earn the money that supports—certain people who lie late and snore. (Her servants, if any, are likely to be Hispanic.)

This is political—and the unmentionable racial—reality behind Mitt Romney’s famous remarks, secretly recorded at a private fundraiser and released by Mother Jones in defiance

But some more readers gave today anyway, bless their hearts, so we’re within about $1,000 of our target of $10,000—a.k.a. 0.0001% of what President Obama and Governor Romney both raised in August (over $100 million). We hope that, as the checks snail in, the balance will be made up.

I want to thank everyone who has helped. I know that, in too many cases, they had to make real sacrifices to do so.

Fundraising is always stressful. But it is profoundly encouraging to the VDARE.com family to see former donors loyally return—and to see new donors, quite unknown to us, appear, sometimes very generously.

I believe that at VDARE.com we are, in effect, part of a process whereby Americans building new communities in the wreck of an old one—whether you regard the old community as the conservative movement, the Republican Party…or America itself.

I can't think of another issue like immigration, where the American people feel so overwhelming one way, but the American elites so hysterically and intolerantly the other. It is now twenty years since I wrote my Time To Rethink Immigration? cover story for National Review, which became my 1995 book Alien Nation.[PDF] I must admit that I never thought the reasonable arguments I presented would be met with such unscrupulous and sustained savagery—or that so many putative allies would quail and flee.

Nor did I expect that, in the third decade after the world was apparently delivered from the curse of Communism, a new form of totalitarianism—which unquestionably merits the name “Cultural Marxism”—would be spreading throughout what was formerly the free world.  

The internet has given dissident publications like VDARE.com life.

But it has also made the need for VDARE.com more imperative. It has enabled Main Stream Media ideological gatekeepers to co-ordinate their political line (painfully evident in the coverage of the hapless Romney campaign) and to orchestrate hysterias, like this year’s Trayvon Martin scam, and witch hunts, like the ones that claimed the MSM careers of VDARE.com contributors Pat Buchanan and John Derbyshire.

I anticipate that this repression will increase after the Presidential election—regardless of who wins, but especially if Obama is re-elected.  I believe that the leaders of what I have called the nation of “Anti-America” are absolutely conscious that there is still time for the historic nation of America to unite, to throw off what from a demographic point of view is undeniably a Minority Occupation Government, and to stop its Electing A New People through immigration policy.

And they are absolutely determined to prevent the historic nation of America from uniting—by “any means necessary.”

I can see no other rational explanation for the MSM’s stupid and innumerate hyping of the “Hispanic” vote (here’s yet another example Vota por mi! Why the Latino vote is crucial in 2012 By Jake Tapper, Richard Coolidge & Sherisse Pham, ABC News September 24, 2012) than that it is part of deliberate strategy to distract attention from the far more important white a.k.a. American vote.

I have always expected that the historic American nation will regain control of its destiny. But I increasingly find myself remembering the last words of the harbinger of an earlier great convulsive national struggle:

"I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with Blood. I had, as I now think, vainly flattered myself that without very much bloodshed it might be done."

I see no sign that the hysteria and intolerance of America’s elites will abate before the immigration policy to which they are so fanatically committed ends in disaster.

And, alas, on the evidence of the useless 112^th Congress, I see no sign that the GOP leadership is capable of assuming the role of “GAP”—Generic American Party—proffered to it by the Tea Parties in 2010.

As a result, Romney’s share of the white vote is currently running even below McCain’s pathetic 55%. (One of the few bright spots this fall is that Conservative Establishment figures like Rush Limbaugh, Scott Rasmussen, and Richard Viguerie—and aspirants like Ben Domenech, here—recognize that the GOP leadership is ominously out of touch with its base).

Over two years ago, concluding an Emergency Appeal after major donor had been scared into abandoning us, I wrote:

“I don't think America's post-1965 immigration disaster will end in violence (although of course there is constant under-reported violence on the Mexican border and elsewhere).

“But I do now believe that achieving patriotic immigration reform will leave American politics and culture transformed much more radically, and painfully, than anyone now imagines.”

Increasingly, at VDARE.com. we will focus on the struggle to retrieve something from the wreck—for example, we will shortly run an article challenging Paul Kersey’s optimistic report of white a.k.a. American suburban secession in Atlanta by analyzing the Obama Administration’s coercive concept of “Regional Equity.”

But I must report that, twice in the last year, I have been told, quite casually and spontaneously, by perfectly responsible adults, one an older woman, that all this—America’s ongoing immigration crisis and the resultant balkanization—will come to blood.

To me, this was eerily similar to the conversation with a constituent worried about immigration that the great British parliamentarian Enoch Powell reported in his epochal 1968 speech:

I can already hear the chorus of execration. How dare I say such a horrible thing? How dare I stir up trouble and inflame feelings by repeating such a conversation?

The answer is that I do not have the right not to do so. Here is a decent, ordinary fellow Englishman, who in broad daylight in my own town says to me, his Member of Parliament, that this country will not be worth living in for his children. I simply do not have the right to shrug my shoulders and think about something else.

What a menagerie we have become, here on the political Right!

Neoconservatives we all know about. They are the guys who favor restraint in taxation and regulation while being supportive of free trade, the welfare state, globalization, and the World Policeman role. Neoconservatives are currently basking in well-funded triumph, having taken over the Republican Party.

Paleoconservatives are still with us, or at least Pat Buchanan and Chronicles magazine are. They preach restraint in foreign relations, traditional values, patriotism, and the Tariff.

Somewhere in between the two lie neo-reactionaries. I can't quite get a handle on this term, but I have been seeing it with rising frequency this past few months. Is it really possible to have a category that includes both Jonah Goldberg and the weird but brilliant Mencius Moldbug? (I am a regular reader of MM, insofar as one can be a regular reader of a blogger who sometimes goes two months between posts.)

One percipient observer sees the beginnings of an entirely new kind of conservatism, distinct from all the foregoing: a "Dark Enlightenment," of which I am (he says) one of the fuglemen, along with the aforementioned Mencius Moldbug.

And then there are the paleolibertarians, defined by Arthur Pendleton on VDARE.com as adherents of "the once-promising intellectual movement that stayed true to libertarian principles while opposing open borders, libertinism, egalitarianism, and political correctness." We haven't heard much of the paloelibertarians since Lew Rockwell joined La Raza, and even persons knowledgeable about the pond life of dissident conservatism might pause when asked to name a current paleolib.

If a name did come up, though, it would almost certainly be that of Hans-Hermann Hoppe. (Full disclosure: I spoke at Hoppe’s annual Property And Freedom Society conference, in beautiful Bodrum, Turkey, last year.)

With less than seven weeks to go, President Obama still seems to be holding a small but decisive lead in the presidential race—some 2.7% according to Real Clear Politics’ average of the polls on the morning of September 19.  And, even more alarming for the GOP: Obama's near-landslide lead in the Electoral College map, which Real Clear Politics puts at 332-206 for Obama.  (RealClearPolitics—2012 Election Maps—Electoral Map No Toss Ups)

It is now clear that the Romney-Ryan strategy of ignoring social issues and campaigning solely on the bad economy is a failure. One recent poll even put the hapless Republican ticket at zero percent among blacks. [Poll: 0 percent of blacks for Mitt Romney, By Mackenzie Weinger, Politico.com, August 22, 2012]

The Obama economic record is indeed poor and the bad news keeps coming: unemployment over 8 percent for 43 straight months, the deficit has reached over 16 trillion, labor force participation is at a 30-year low and $4 gas is here yet again. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke’s September 13 announcement of a massive new money-printing program (“QE 3”), obviously risking inflation, is an outright admission of failure (which Romney, curiously, has failed to exploit).

So why aren't independents, working class voters (the old Reagan Democrats from battleground states like Pennsylvania, Ohio and Michigan) and others flocking to the Republicans? Perhaps it is because elections are not decided solely on tax and budget issues.

According to a recent Zogby poll, Romney leads Obama among whites by a 52-38 percent margin. But he is actually losing self-identified NASCAR fans (mostly working class whites) by 1 percentage point (44-43 percent). “That’s a number you would never expect to see,” commented pollster John Zogby. Because he is not getting the support of these Reagan Democrats, Romney is actually
